Myth: A phone camera alone can measure blood pressure

Can a Phone Camera Measure Blood Pressure? What You Should Know

You may have seen apps claiming that you can measure your blood pressure simply by placing a finger over your phone's camera or looking into the camera for a few seconds.

It sounds convenient—but your phone camera alone should not be considered a replacement for a validated blood pressure monitor.

This distinction matters. High blood pressure often has no obvious symptoms, and inaccurate readings can give you a false sense of reassurance or unnecessary concern.

For reliable home blood pressure monitoring, the American Heart Association recommends using an automatic, cuff-style upper-arm blood pressure monitor and following proper measurement technique.

Why can a phone measure heart rate but not reliably measure blood pressure?

This is where much of the confusion comes from.

A smartphone camera can detect subtle changes in light caused by blood flowing through tissue. This technique, known as photoplethysmography or PPG, can be used to estimate your pulse or heart rate.

But heart rate and blood pressure are not the same measurement.

Heart rate is simply how many times your heart beats per minute. Blood pressure represents the pressure of blood against your artery walls and is reported as two values: systolic and diastolic pressure.

Some experimental and cuffless technologies attempt to estimate blood pressure using optical signals, pulse timing, algorithms, machine learning, or combinations of sensors. Research in this area is ongoing.

According to an American Heart Association scientific statement on cuffless blood pressure devices, these technologies generally estimate blood pressure indirectly, and their accuracy can be affected by factors including movement, sensor position, posture, calibration and real-world conditions.

Detecting a pulse through a camera does not automatically mean a device can accurately determine your blood pressure.

Be cautious of apps that claim to measure blood pressure with only a camera or fingertip

If an app tells you it can measure your systolic and diastolic blood pressure simply by placing your finger over a phone camera, it is reasonable to ask an important question:

Has this technology actually been validated and authorized for measuring blood pressure?

In September 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned consumers about unauthorized devices and software that claim to measure or estimate blood pressure.

The FDA warned that inaccurate blood pressure readings can lead to problems such as failure to detect changes in blood pressure or inappropriate decisions based on incorrect results.

A polished app interface and a realistic-looking blood pressure number do not prove that the measurement is accurate.

What should you use to measure blood pressure at home?

The American Heart Association recommends an automatic, cuff-style upper-arm blood pressure monitor for home monitoring.

When choosing a monitor:

  • Look for a device that has been independently validated for accuracy.
  • Make sure the cuff is the correct size for your arm.
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Ask your healthcare professional or pharmacist if you are unsure which monitor is appropriate for you.
  • Consider bringing your home monitor to a medical appointment so your healthcare professional can check that you are using it correctly.

You can also search for independently validated blood pressure monitors through ValidateBP.org, which is referenced by the American Heart Association in its home-monitoring guidance.

Proper technique also matters.

Before measuring your blood pressure, the American Heart Association recommends resting quietly for at least five minutes, sitting with your back supported, keeping your feet flat on the floor, supporting your arm at heart level, and placing the cuff on bare skin.

Small differences in posture, cuff placement, activity, or technique can affect your readings.

Why accurate blood pressure measurement matters

High blood pressure is sometimes called a "silent" condition because many people do not experience obvious symptoms.

That makes measurement especially important.

A single reading provides information about your blood pressure at one moment in time. A series of properly measured readings can provide a much more useful picture of how your blood pressure changes over time.

This can be particularly useful when discussing your blood pressure with a healthcare professional or evaluating how lifestyle changes or a treatment plan are progressing.

That is also why relying on an unvalidated measurement method can be problematic. If the original measurement is inaccurate, tracking that number more carefully does not make it more accurate.

Start with a reliable measurement. Then track it.

So where does SmartBP fit in?

SmartBP does not measure your blood pressure using your phone's camera.

Instead, SmartBP helps you make better use of blood pressure readings obtained from a separate blood pressure monitor.

You can use SmartBP to:

  • Record your systolic and diastolic blood pressure
  • Track pulse and other information alongside your readings
  • View averages, charts, statistics, and trends over time
  • Add notes and tags that provide context around a measurement
  • Connect supported Bluetooth blood pressure monitors
  • Organize your blood pressure history
  • Generate reports that can be shared with your healthcare professional

You can learn more about how SmartBP works in the SmartBP FAQ.

Think of the relationship this way:

Your blood pressure monitor takes the measurement. SmartBP helps you keep track of it.

Your phone can be extremely useful in blood pressure management—just not in the way some camera-only measurement claims suggest.

How to evaluate a blood pressure app or device

Before relying on any product that claims to actually measure your blood pressure, consider asking:

1. What is actually taking the measurement?

Is there a physical blood pressure cuff or validated sensor, or is the product generating a number solely from a phone camera or other indirect signal?

2. Has the measurement technology been clinically validated?

Look for evidence supporting the accuracy of the specific device or technology—not simply claims that the underlying technology is "scientific."

3. Does it have the appropriate regulatory authorization?

Requirements vary by country.

In the United States, the FDA recommends checking whether a blood pressure device has appropriate marketing authorization. You can search the FDA's 510(k) Premarket Notification database by device name.

4. Is the app measuring blood pressure or simply tracking readings?

These are very different functions.

An app that records readings obtained from a blood pressure monitor is not claiming that the phone itself measured your blood pressure.

SmartBP is specifically designed to record, track, analyze and organize blood pressure readings obtained separately.

Cuffless blood pressure technology may improve—but validation matters

Cuffless blood pressure monitoring is an active area of research.

Researchers are exploring optical sensors, wearable devices, pulse-wave analysis, machine learning, and other approaches that may eventually make blood pressure monitoring easier and more continuous.

The American Heart Association's 2025 scientific statement on cuffless blood pressure technologies notes that these devices may have significant future potential. However, it also highlights remaining questions around validation, calibration and accuracy during everyday real-world use.

That doesn't mean cuffless technology has no future.

It means consumers should distinguish between promising technology and a measurement method that has been adequately validated for the way they are using it today.

The bottom line

A phone can be an excellent tool for managing your blood pressure information.

But don't confuse tracking blood pressure with measuring blood pressure.

For home monitoring:

  • Use a validated blood pressure monitor to take your reading.
  • Follow proper measurement technique.
  • Be cautious about products that claim to measure blood pressure using only a phone camera or fingertip.
  • Check whether a measurement technology has appropriate validation and regulatory authorization.
  • Use SmartBP to record, visualize, organize and share your measured readings.

The monitor measures. SmartBP helps you make sense of the numbers over time.

This is so much easier than writing it down!

Great way
to track BP

I’ve been having high BP readings at the clinic the last few months. Doctor is ready to put me on meds. I asked for a few weeks to check readings and improve lifestyle. This app is showing me so many things! Like what the average reading is and what percentage it’s on each category. Turns okay systolic the majority’s of the time but it looks like I have diastolic hypertension which is supposed to be rare. I wouldn’t have known this without the insights and stats screens.

Unfortunately I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and need to monitor twice daily at least and review with my doctor every three months. She and I both love the app because you can track a lot more than just BP and you can share your findings. I love that I can SEE it clearly too as some other apps I tried were very small and very light text. Even though I could track in Apple health kit I prefer this for many reasons and you can pull the data from here to there anyway AND then other apps if you do desire like LoseIt!

SmartBP is being a great help to me tracking my blood pressure while I’m battling high pressure. Having the graphs and stats is encouraging when I see the downward trend. Being able to send a report to the doctor instantly is great for getting feedback from the doctor easily. I like that the limits can be modified and have changed mine (with help of my doctor) to reflect the parameters that apply for me. Great response from the developer to my questions and suggestions. You know you have a good app when the developer is working to make it better and responsive to input. I see from other posts that this developer is engaged with users and working on making the app even better!
